THE QUESTION: Is Neuromarketing Ethical?

THE TALKBACK TAKEAWAY: Hazel Henderson’s post “Un-Ethical Neuromarketing” brought a slew of comments from readers. Most were appalled to find out about neuromarketing. One commenter proposed including a larger range of “values” in “sustainability” to account for such practices; another wrote, “whenever ‘free choice’ is manipulated for the benefit of one over another, it’s basically subjugation.” But neuromarketing also had a defender, who argued it was no different than other forms of advertising, and that “marketing is about meeting customer needs” and so understanding needs through scanning brain reactions to marketing messages was part of that effort.
